Meet Julia, An Application Scientist here on Industrial Placement at Edinburgh Analytical!

As an Applications Scientist, I do the typical things such as researching different ways our instruments can be used in industry and research, analysing samples, and compiling data. Then, I spend some time writing content for our website regarding my findings.
That being said, every day is different! I may or may not have gone to the shops to buy about 10 bottles of wine, or taken a field trip to the local river Almond to collect water samples… For my Application Notes, of course!

I remember seeing the advert for Edinburgh Instruments during my hunt for an industrial placement. I liked that the placement seemed to offer a variety of projects, as well as an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of a multitude of analytical techniques and practices. I admired the environmental goals and collaborative work environment the company offered; I was also very impressed by the “Knowledgebase” on the website. I knew immediately that all of that was something I wanted to apply my skills to and be a part of.
And luckily, I got the position! I’ve been here for about 2 months now, and already feel like I’ve learned so much and gained invaluable experience in the industry.
I’m a bit of a blend of an outdoorsy person who is also a big homebody. I like travelling and going out of the city to hike or cycle around the Highlands; I also enjoy sports such as tennis, dancing and rock climbing. However, I usually love putting some music on and curling up on the sofa with a new crochet project or book on a rainy evening – lately I’ve been diving into the world of poetry and fantasy fiction.
I also love spending my free time with friends and family whenever I can! And you will regularly find me either attending or buying tickets for yet another gig: I really love music, and I try to get myself to as many live performances as possible.

I’m half Scottish and half Bulgarian – I actually grew up in Bulgaria and only moved to Scotland about 5 years ago. It’s been very cool to grow up as part of two very different cultures and be able to experience the unique parts of each country. Because of that, I’m fluent in both English in Bulgarian, though I can actually read 3 different alphabets: Latin, Cyrillic and Greek!

It’s honestly so hard to pick a favourite because I love so many different cuisines and enjoy trying out new dishes! Pasta would have to be up there for me though, just any type of pasta. And anything that involves cheese – I’m just a girl who loves cheese. A big favourite of mine is also banitsa, a traditional Bulgarian phyllo and feta pastry.
